Hippies felt alienated from middle-class society, which they saw as dominated by materialism and repression, and they developed their own distinctive lifestyle. They favoured long hair and casual, often unconventional, dress, sometimes in”psychedeli” colours. Many males grew beards, and both men and women wore sandals and beads. Long flowing granny dresses were popular with women, and rimless granny glasses with both men and women. Hippies commonly took up communal or cooprative living arrangements, and they often adopted vegetarian diets based on unprocessed foods and practiced holistic medicine. Hippies advocated nonviolence and ove a popular phrase being ”make love, not war”, for which they were sometimes called flower children.” The promoted opennedd and tolerance as alternatives to the restrictions and regimentationthey saw in middle-class society. They often practiced open sexual relationships and lived in various types of family groups.
Music and film influences.
Both folk and rock music were an integral part of hippie culture. Singers such as bob dylan and Joan Baez and groups such as the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Jefferon Airplane were among these most closley identified with the movement. The musical Hair, a celebration of the hippie lifestyle, opened on Broadway in 1968, and the film Easy rider, which reflected hippie values and aesthetics, appeared in 1969. Public gatherings – part music festivals, sometiems protests, often simply excuses for celebrations of life – were an important part of hippie movement. A three day festival known as woodstick, held in rural New York state in 1969, drew an estimated 400,000 -500,000 people and became virtually interchangable with the movement.
Flowers were such a main attraction within the hippy movement, if it wasnt matualy in your hair or around your neck it was printed or stitched onto clothing, creating bright and colourful patterns, if you didn;t have flowers, a pocahontas headband will suit you just right! The hair was usually kept quite long and ”unkept” looking but it is clean, they did wash their hair. Women could wear mini or even micro skirt provided she had decent legs. A chain belt was classed as ‘groovy’, you were able to wear boots or go-go boots. If men wore jeans the grungier they were the better they were and if this was matched with a leather vest it would be 100% better. the peace symbol was found on every member atleast once, so if you didn’t contain this one vital element you weren’t considered part of this movement.
